News & Happenings

September 2007

I hope that everyone has had a great summer and is looking forward to the fall season. Our season will commence on Sept. 17, 2007 . This year permanent court time will begin the same week we open. Also, due to our lengthened season this year a discount has been offered for permanent court time.

JUNIOR NEWS: Our Junior USTA teams will be forming with Eric Sturgis and Ogi Senic captaining our teams. Last season we did send several teams to play-offs. Our advanced 18 year old team came within points of advancing to regionals. It's a fun opportunity for juniors to participate in a relaxed competitive environment.

Junior League: On Thursdays at 4 pm we are forming a junior league for 15 – 18 years old players. There will be doubles and singles courts. Each week you would either play singles or doubles and your scores will accumulate. Prizes will be awarded the last week to the winner and runner-up. The price for 16 weeks is $150/person. Each participant must be a member of the club.

Junior Tournaments: Our juniors have enjoyed Ogi's junior tournaments. The first tournament will be held in October. He will offer a total of 4 tournaments throughout the year and your scores will accumulate until the final tournament when prizes will be awarded. The tournaments will be held on Saturday nights. Please contact Ogi for more information, and watch the bulletin board for upcoming events.

TRAVEL TEAMS: Our Suburban and East Metro travel teams will be underway shortly. The Friday Suburban teams this year are: Women's 8.5; 8.0; 7.5; 7.0; 6.0; and 5.5. Our weekend teams are: Sunday 4.5; Sunday 3.5, and Mixed 7.0 doubles. The Friday 5.5 team is for advanced beginner tennis players looking for competitive play without the pressure of USTA. We are looking for players to add to our teams so please call the club @ 248-528-3400, if you are interested.

USTA COMBO TEAMS: We have several USTA combo teams playing at the club this winter. If you are interested in forming a USTA combo team, please call Kathy at the club. USTA combo teams do advance to Fort Wayne for playoffs.

SUMMER USTA NEWS: Donna Kennis captained a very strong 3.0 team this summer. The team made it to district finals and lost out to Wimbledon to advance to States. We are very proud of our Troy ladies: Donna Kennis, Jill Thompson, Sonia Sheppard, Kelly Daniels, Susan Proefke, Michelle Carpenter, Sudi Kouvaris, Carolyn Samuels, Ann White, Lisa Patrick, Elaine Messina, and Kim Greidanus. Congratulations and Great Job!

FALL LEAGUES: We Are looking to fill a few spots in our leagues. The men's 4.0 Singles on Mon. 9 – 10:30 and the men's doubles on Tues. 8 – 10 pm need a few players. Also, some daytime women's leagues need one or two players, so check your calendars and give the club a call.

TENNIS ETIQUETTE: As we start our season, I would like to remind everyone of a few common tennis courtesies that would make everyone's experience more enjoyable.

•  Do not walk across any court when play is in progress.

•  When returning an errant ball to a neighboring court, wait until a break in play.

•  Don't wander onto another court to retrieve your ball, the players on the other court will return your ball as soon as possible.

SCOTT'S TENNIS TIP: When volleying a ball that is below the net line:

•  relax your grip

•  exhale on contact

•  bend your knees not your waist

•  be a good surfer

Great to have you all back and if there is anything I can do to make this year more pleasurable, please contact me.

Kathy Del Dotto
