At the Troy Racquet Club Academy, children can start playing as young as 4 years old. We offer a fun and friendly environment where your child’s confidence will soar when they make their first point. Tennis is a lifelong activity that not only helps your child develop strength and balance, but also helps your child improve focus and develop discipline.
ln a word, “No”, When it comes to tennis, we follow the same logic as other youth sports like baseball or soccer, which use kid-sized courts and kid-sized equipment. Kids learn to play baseball by first playing T-ball where they use smaller lighter bats, bigger balls & a smaller playing field. Kids learning basketball shoot baskets with kidsized balls on lowered backboards and they play soccer on smaller fields with smaller goals.
TRC Academy participates with the USTA 10 and Under Tennis, now balls bounce lower, don’t move as fast through the air and are easier to hit. We use smaller nets and the court area is smaller and easier to cover for small feet. The benefits are immediate and within a short time kids are rallying, playing, and excited to keep playing. That means kids will have more fun and less frustration. They‘re playing real tennis and having real fun–and that’s what is most important.

If we have room in a class, we will offer a makeup to those who request it. However, if classes are full, we will not have a makeup to offer. It is the responsibility of the student to attend the class for which they are registered.
If an indoor class is canceled due to weather or other unusual circumstances, a makeup will be scheduled, or, other arrangements will be made.
During the outdoor season, a makeup will be scheduled for rain outs, and an email that includes the makeup information, will be sent out to the class. Also, rain makeup information will be posted on our website under “Announcements”.
While the name and description of the class can be a guide on where you should initially place your child, as long as your child is enjoying tennis and is making continued progress, there shouldn’t be much concern about the name of the class. Typically, students continue in a level 6 months to a year. Our coaches will let you know if your child has outgrown their class or level. How often a student plays per week, age and prior experience in other sports, as well as general athleticism all factor in to how quickly a student progresses. Tennis is sport for a lifetime, and in the end, we want your child to progress as well as have fun!
